Potato Head movie: he sticks traits on typecast bodies to fabricate characters to his needs, and he shoots the movie to match, with short clip-like scenes or shots that insert and highlight these traits. The result is a movie with an almost complete absence of mystery, of any implication of beneath-the-surface complexity—except when someone blurts out a line of dialogue that reveals, out of nowhere, crucial aspects of the story that had to that point been hidden from viewers though clearly known to the speaker. The story, as everyone knows by now, concerns Mavis Charlize Theron , a troubled, reckless ghostwriter on a failing Y. There she encounters another former classmate, Matt Patton Oswalt , who was the victim of a vicious attack by other students he was assumed—wrongly—to be gay , which left him grievously, permanently, intimately wounded. Throughout, Mavis spews contempt at the regular folks who never left Mercury—those who work in local businesses General Mills, where Buddy works in ad sales, seems to be a major employer , who frequent local bars and patronize the malls.
